1. What is Chiller Approach Temperature?

Approach is the temperature difference between the refrigerant saturation temperature inside the chiller shell and the water temperature leaving or entering that shell. It acts as the primary health indicator for heat transfer efficiency in a centrifugal or screw chiller.

2. Evaporator Approach vs. Condenser Approach

  • Evaporator Approach (Chilled Water): $$\text{Evaporator Approach} = \text{Leaving Chilled Water Temp (LCHWT)} - \text{Saturated Evaporator Refrigerant Temp}$$ Normal Range: 1.0°F to 2.0°F. Higher values indicate low refrigerant charge, oil fouling, or scale inside evaporator tubes.
  • Condenser Approach (Water-Cooled): $$\text{Condenser Approach} = \text{Saturated Condenser Refrigerant Temp} - \text{Leaving Condenser Water Temp (LCWT)}$$ Normal Range: 1.5°F to 3.0°F. Higher values indicate tube scaling, algae build-up, or non-condensable air trapped in the condenser.

3. Why Does Approach Increase? (Causes of Fouling)

  • Tube Scaling & Fouling: Minerals (calcium, magnesium) from cooling tower water deposit inside condenser tubes, acting as thermal insulation.
  • Refrigerant Contamination or Oil Fouling: Excessive oil carryover into the evaporator coats the refrigerant side of tubes, reducing heat transfer.
  • Non-Condensable Gases: Trapped air in low-pressure chillers drives up condenser saturation temperature, widening the approach. Learn complete plant troubleshooting at JCI Classes Training Center following ASHRAE Guidelines.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1. What is a normal Condenser Approach for a centrifugal chiller? +
For a clean, well-maintained centrifugal chiller, a normal Condenser Approach is between 1.5°F and 3.0°F. If it exceeds 4.5°F to 5.0°F, mechanical tube cleaning (rodding) is urgently required.
Q2. How does high approach affect chiller power consumption (kW/Ton)? +
Every 1°F increase in condenser approach increases compressor lift, resulting in roughly 2% to 3% higher energy consumption (kW/Ton), substantially increasing utility operational costs.
Q3. What causes a sudden drop or zero approach reading? +
An abnormally low or zero approach usually points toward sensor calibration errors, faulty pressure transducers, or incorrect refrigerant temperature readouts on the control panel.
